PM Update: Another cool night on the way

The cool airmass which was in place throughout the area on Monday will remain through Monday Night and most of Tuesday, with a cool overnight period and early morning expected on Tuesday. Temperatures are forecast to drop into the

NAM Model forecasting low temperatures in the 40’s inland and 50’s in New York City for the morning of Tuesday 9/25/12.

40’s once again over the interior suburbs of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. Temperatures on Sunday Night/Monday morning bottomed out in the upper 30’s in some isolated locations including the Pine Barrens of Central New Jersey, the Northwest NJ Hills, and much of Interior New England. Although temperatures could end up a few degrees warmer overnight Monday Night into Tuesday, the general trend will continue to be an autumn airmass which is more cool and crisp than anything to push through the region since early last Spring. Still, a warmup in the middle of the week should serve as a reminder that we are still very early in the Autumn season, and temperatures are forecast to rise into the 80’s ahead of a cold front which will pass the area Wednesday. Some showers and thunderstorms will once again be possible with the frontal passage — with another cooldown expected thereafter, leading us to the end of the work week.

Foliage Update: The wonderful colors of fall continue to spread through much of New England, and are beginning to make their way towards New Jersey, Southeast New York, and Connecticut. Very little foliage has been reported thus far over New York City and Long Island, but some of the mountain ranges in Northern New Jersey are now reporting “Low Color”. A vast area of New England is reporting Low Color, with some “Moderate Color” reported in Northern New England (mainly Vermont and New Hampshire). We’ll keep you updated over the next few weeks as the foliage begins to become more noticeable!

Forecast in detail..

Tuesday: Cool to start, with temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s throughout much of the area. Clear skies, light wind. Things change a little by afternoon, however, with winds turning southwest and picking up a bit. Temperatures will end up, in the afternoon, a few degrees warmer than they did on Monday. High temperatures in the low 70’s should be common throughout the area.

Tuesday Night: Warmer than the past few nights with low temperatures in the 50’s and even low 60’s in the city and along the coast. With due south winds and an approaching disturbance, expect developing clouds overnight.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy should be the theme on Wednesday (although there could be some breaks of sun) with showers and isolated storms throughout the area.  High temperatures in the upper 70’s expected throughout a good portion of the area, with some 80+ temperatures possible in Central and Southern NJ.

Looking ahead: Cold front passes, bringing more west-northwest winds by the end of the week, with another cool airmass settling in. However, by the weekend, it appears things will get unsettled once again with most forecast models pointing towards various disturbances in the atmosphere and a front near the area. We could see a few days worth of clouds and showers with temperatures near normal. More details will likely emerge as we get a few days closer.
