Pleasant weather, wet weekend, foliage update

The weather over the past several days has been astonishingly pleasant – with highs in the low to mid 70’s, abundant sunshine and low humidity. A Canadian high pressure, which settled into the area earlier this week, has modified a bit — but continues to provide benign weather and comfortable air. The low humidity and near-average highs for this time of the year are comfortable by nature. The deep blue skies will continue for another day on Thursday, with highs expected to reach into the middle to upper 70’s. A few clouds could sneak in on Friday, but the idea of calm weather and comfortable air will continue. Thursday Night will still be a bit brisk, with lows falling into the 50’s.

The forecast takes a bit of an unsettled turn this weekend, as a frontal system approaches. The high pressure system which has dominated the areas weather for an extended period of time will begin to lose its grip on the pattern, and slip off to the east. A frontal system and disturbance in the mid levels of the atmosphere will approach from the west, with forecast models showing increasing clouds on Saturday and an area of showers and rain approaching by late Saturday Night into Sunday.

There had been some hints of a coastal system forming along the front zone, which slows once it gets offshore, but models are now in good agreement that the front will clear the area by Sunday afternoon. It will bring with it another shot of cool air, so despite the showers early on Sunday it appears that Sunday afternoon could feature more sun and lower humidity. All in all, the weekend doesn’t look to be a washout — but clouds and showers will make an appearance for a brief time Saturday Night into Sunday.

Foliage Update: Fall foliage is a seasonal event which we like to track here at New York Metro Weather. Our area is fortunate enough to experience some brilliant autumn colors beginning in late September and continuing into November. Foliage has begun in earnest across much of New England, with the latest foliage report indicating “Low Color” across isolated areas as of September 18th. The colors typically pick up fairly rapidly over the next week or two, so stay tuned for further updates and information. Most of all, be sure to send us photos of your fall foliage progress (or trips to visit more colorful areas).
