Thursday Overview: Warmth will be fleeting

Warmer air has infiltrated the region today, and will remain in the area through the afternoon hours. A storm system to our west is ushering in warmer air via southerly winds, and increasing moisture with higher dew points is notable as well. All of this is occurring ahead of a cold front, which will approach the area later on this afternoon and evening.

The frontal boundary will become the focal point for the development of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms, some of which may produce gusty winds. These storms will move east/northeast of the area, with another round of showers expected tonight before the system clears out by Friday. The latest and greatest weather information is available below:

  • Heavy rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected this afternoon, right before the Yankees and Astros play their 4:05pm game at Yankee stadium. There looks to be a window for the game between 4 and 7 PM before showers return. Check out the brand new SportsCast for the latest information.
  • Clearing is expected on Friday, but temperatures will be colder than normal once again.
  • The rumors are true: There is the potential for some wintry precipitation on Saturday. A low pressure system developing offshore may produce bands of precipitation as it forms offshore. These bands are likely to be rain, but the possibility exists that dynamic cooling will allow some snow to fall in the heaviest bands. Pinning down exactly where these bands are located will be critical over the next 24 hours.
