Thursday Overview: Hot and humid, a few strong storms

Hot and humid weather will continue today, with heat index values expected to again rise into the mid to upper 90’s by the late morning and afternoon hours. The temperatures will again be hot, but the bigger story by this afternoon and evening will be the dew points, which are expected to rise into the 70’s. The combination will lead to heat index values higher than yesterday. The air will feel quite oppressive as well, especially as the afternoon draws on into the evening.

In addition to the heat will come a threat for strong and severe thunderstorms, in association with a mid level disturbance approaching the area. If enough lift develops, a few isolated storms could initiate this afternoon. High instability suggests the potential for dangerous lightning and occasionally strong winds. The bigger story in any storms would be the potential for flooding, given the high atmospheric moisture content. The overall threat for severe weather is expected to remain relatively low, however, given a lack of overall shear. Here are todays weather bullets:

  • Heat index values will again approach or exceed 95 F during the afternoon in many spots with temperatures over 90 F.
  • A few strong and severe storms are possible throughout the area, capable of lightning and very heavy rain
  • The heat will continue into Friday, as will the humidity.
  • A front will near the area on Saturday, possibly bringing strong and severe storms with it.
