More heavy rain expected in the Northeast on Wednesday

A complex storm system will continue its evolution throughout the United States from later Tuesday into Wednesday. The first round shifted northeast of the Mid Atlantic this evening, moving towards Southern New England. A strong low level jet associated with this system aided in the development of widespread heavy rain, with many areas receiving well over 1″ of rainfall by the time the system ended.

Another disturbance, embedded within the same storm system, will approach the Northeast US on Wednesday. Ahead of its arrival, southwest winds will commence and warm, moist air will push northeast late Tuesday Night into Wednesday ahead of a warm front. This will allow some areas of dense fog to develop during the overnight period and into the morning hours of Wednesday.

A warm front is expected to shift through the Mid Atlantic and towards New England on Wednesday, with additional rounds of downpours developing along it. This front will shift northwards as a cold front gradually approaches from the Ohio Valley. Shifting eastwards through Pennsylvania and New York State, some embedded thunderstorms are expected to develop along it.

Impressive atmospheric dynamics will again be present on Wednesday, lending confidence to the idea that heavy rainfall will occur once again. This will be especially true both near the warm frontal boundary in the late morning and early afternoon, and again near the mentioned cold front in the early evening hours.

A few stronger wind gusts are also possible as the line of thunderstorms, near the cold front, marches eastwards. These storms are expected to gradually weaken as they push towards the coast of New Jersey and New York, but torrential downpours are still likely as the front moves towards the coast as well.

The system is expected to clear the Northeast US coasts by the early morning hours on Thursday, with cold air rushing in behind the cold front. This will lead to calmer, drier, and colder weather by the end of the week.
