1/17 Zones 7 & 8 Update on Ice Threat over Far Northern Interior Areas Today

Low pressure system is currently over the Ohio Valley this morning. As it tracks northeast into the Eastern Great Lakes, it will cause a warm front to approach the region. Areas of light precipitation, have been gradually developing over the region this morning. Warmer air has already moved into the lower and mid-levels of the atmosphere. of So many locations are just seeing rain today.

However, some colder, dry air near the surface and lower levels may be harder to scour out for some higher elevations just north of I-84, and over Northwest CT, This lead some areas patchy light freezing rain that could be mixed some with snow or sleet. No substantial snow accumulations are anticipated. But some slippery travel conditions are possible with a light glaze of ice on roads and sidewalks.

Wet-bulb temperatures still near or below freezing north I-84 and over Northern CT, may support temperatures drop below freezing, as precipitation falls, for some wintry mix or freezing rain

Precipitation will become steadier and heavier later this afternoon, as more lift and moisture increase with warm front closer. Temperatures should warming into mid-upper 30s to near 40 should be for rain in most areas. But a secondary low developing south of Long Island, may cause low-level winds turn more east or northeast. Thus keeping more low-level cold air place for some highest elevations areas of freezing rain possibly mixed with snow or sleet.

Again no significant snow accumulations are anticipated over the zones. But combination of snow or ice could lead to more hazardous travel conditions later this afternoon. Especially over Northern Connecticut, where some heavier precipitation is more likely closer to the secondary low tracking south of New England. We continue to stick to our previous forecast for wintry mix or icing today over far northern interior areas. Another update may come this afternoon or evening, if necessary.
