1/29 PM All Zones Update: Light snow skirts by on Monday

Zone 4 and 5 Subscribers: Please proceed to the latest local mesoscale update for the ongoing storm.

A weak low pressure system is developing this evening across the Mid Atlantic states, and will continue to move east/northeastwards to a  position off the New Jersey coast from later tonight into Sunday Morning. The low pressure area is associated with a deep, but progressive mid and upper level trough which is moving through the Northeast states as we speak. This trough is of polar origin, emanating from Canada.

The “clipper” system will develop through the evening, as lift in the atmosphere strengthens and expands. Additional moisture will also be drawn into the system as the low pressure center develops tonight. The two will coincide over Southeast parts of New Jersey from late Sunday Night into Monday morning.

This will result in the potential for light snowfall accumulations across Southeast New Jersey on Sunday Night and Monday morning. Elsewhere, however, the potential for accumulating snow is quite low. In Northern NJ, NYC and Long Island, a period of snow is possible on Monday morning, but drier air and less lift will keep the occurrence brief and the intensity light.

No snowfall accumulations are expected in those regions, or in areas further north. Instead, seasonable temperatures and clouds are likely to pass by the area, with a cold wintry feel in the air during the day. Colder air will filter in as the storm pulls away during the afternoon and evening, with cooler temperatures arriving again at night.

The next chance for precipitation arrives on Tuesday afternoon and evening, as another clipper system passes through Southeast Canada and into the Northeast. This system will be further north across New England, with the potential for light snow in the area later Tuesday.

Some light snowfall accumulation is possible, particularly in areas further north in New Jersey, Southeast New York, and Connecticut. The system will be moving rather quickly and improving conditions are again expected on Wednesday. But crews should keep an eye out for potential road treatment Tuesday and monitor the forthcoming forecasts.
