2/1/17 AM All Zones Update: More Tranquil Weather Returns, Colder by Friday

Weather conditions will gradually improve today, as low pressure tracks northeast of the region. Clouds will likely break for some sunshine during the morning hours. But some instability and moisture remaining in the atmosphere, will likely keep some clouds into this afternoon. An upper-level disturbance passing through could also help trigger a few widely scattered snow or rain showers this afternoon.

Despite clouds, west-southwest winds will help temperatures rise into the lower to middle 40s over the region. A tight pressure gradient and steep lapse rates gusting to around 30 are possible later this afternoon. High pressure building in from the Midwest, will lead more clearing and light winds tonight. This will allow for temperatures to fall into the lower to middle 20s over Interior valleys and perhaps the Pine Barrens and upper 20s to lower 30s over urban and coastal areas.

More sunshine is likely tomorrow, with high temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s. A cold front will move across the region later tomorrow. This front will likely move through region dry. But colder air mass with temperatures several degrees below normal will arrive for Friday and Saturday. Daytime highs will be in the lower to middle 30s, with overnight lows well down into the 20s and perhaps down into the teens for many of the suburbs.

GFS low temperatures Saturday morning

GFS model low temperatures Saturday morning

High pressure will move offshore with clouds increasing on Sunday. Temperatures may moderate again with a southwest flow back into the upper 30s to lower 40s. Models still keep polar and pacific disturbances weaker and unphased with next storm system moving into the East. So any precipitation (snow or wintry mix) on Sunday looks likely to light side in this region, at this time.

A larger storm system, tracking northwest of the region, may bring more significant precipitation, during the middle of next week. Stay tuned more zone forecast updates on both systems as we get closer!
