PM Update: Briefly unsettled weather continues in the Northeast

Good evening and Happy Friday! An active weather day continues across much of the Northeast States. Despite a lack of organized severe weather or widespread impactful hazardous conditions, scattered thunderstorm coverage throughout the Northeast part of the country has created issues, specifically in regards to air travel. Significant delays were reported this evening in many major Northeast US airports as a result of the showers and storms.

The weather over the next day or so will be continually unsettled, as multiple disturbances move through the Northeast states. Warm air advection (the movement of warmer air through the atmosphere) will continue in the lower levels, promoting the expansion of moisture and higher humidity values. This, coupled with the presence of mid level disturbances in the atmosphere, will lead to multiple chances of rain and storms.

This afternoon's NAM model showing a few ripples of embedded vorticity swinging through the area, which may trigger some showers and thunderstorms. The first round of precipitation may be during the overnight (Tropical Tidbits).

While the severe weather threat is expected to remain low, storm coverage and rain coverage will increase from tonight into Saturday, and then tick upwards again on Saturday afternoon throughout the Northeast. This will be in response to a 500mb shortwave trough, providing lift in a weak to moderately unstable atmosphere.

We break down the details in a more technical fashion on our latest Premium Dashboard post for the Northeast States. We’ve got the details there on the days that follow, as well, — but for a brief hint, Sunday and Monday look to feature much more pleasant weather with improving conditions.

Have a wonderful Friday evening!
