Thursday Briefing: Warmer Weekend, Northeast Snow Monday or Tuesday?

Good morning! Very cold and dry weather is expected through today and tonight, as arctic high pressure will remain in control over the Northeast. Mostly sunny skies are expected with high temperatures generally in the upper 20s to lower 30s. The very same clear skies will continue through tonight, as low temperatures fall into the teens over the interior and the lower 20’s even in urban areas.

High pressure will begin moving offshore on Friday, so temperatures will begin to moderate tomorrow afternoon into the upper 30s and lower 40s. Friday night will be warmer for many areas — but some radiational cooling should still allow for the Interior Valleys and Pine Barrens to drop into upper teens or low 20s by daybreak.

Eyes on weekend storm as model inconsistency continues

Active weather continued throughout much of the Northeast states Thursday, with transient clouds and showery activity for much of the day as a disturbance in the levels of the atmosphere passed through. This disturbance was relatively weak and, as mentioned, transient in nature, limiting the potential for strong to severe thunderstorm coverage that may have otherwise existed, especially given the presence of instability.

With that said, pleasant conditions gradually returned to the majority of the Northeast states on Friday morning — but it will be short lived.

Premium: Coastal Storm with Heavy Rainfall Possible Late Week

After the heat wave last week, more cooler, unsettled weather has returned to the region, as a trough moves through the Northeast.  More clouds and onshore flow this week have kept high temperatures well below average over the region — it certainly doesn’t feel like the middle of summer. High pressure will support more pleasant, warmer weather on Wednesday. Then it looks like something we often see during the fall and winter months: a coastal storm with the potential for heavy rainfall by Thursday night and Friday and perhaps into this weekend as well. But uncertainty is still quite high with exactly how this storm evolve, its timing, and how much impact it will have on the region.

AM Update: Coastal storm skirts by, summer heat looms

A day which once looked lost to the soggy rains from a coastal storm will turn out quite alright, and the weekend that follows will be the warmest of the year. We come bearing good news this morning, because that day is today and the weekend that follows is just over the hill! Yes, we are finally on the tail end of a drawn out dreary, rainy and cool pattern which was brought into our area by the presence of high latitude blocking.

A coastal storm system will skirt the region to the east today, with heavy rains off the Mid Atlantic and Northeast Coast from today in tonight. As this low pressure system develops, swinging eastward alongside a large trough sitting over the Northeast States, rising air is likely to its northwest. This will produce heavy rain offshore, but also allow sinking air (subsidence) to spread into the Northeast during the day.
