Sunday Overview: Warmth today followed by showers and possible t-storms this evening

Today has gotten off to beautiful, warm start for this time of year!  A weak cold front slowly moving through the region is cause some clouds to mix with sunshine this morning. But dry conditions remain as lift is currently too weak this front. Some sunshine with more west-southwest winds, will help temperatures rise into the lower or middle 70s over much of region this afternoon. Which around 10 degrees warmer than normal for the end of October.

However, a wave of low pressure developing along the cold front will enhance more lift,-leading to more cloud cover and numerous showers around the region later this afternoon and evening. A widespread, heavy rainfall is not currently anticipated. But with the airmass becoming warmer and unstable, some showers and thunderstorms with heavy downpours and frequent lightning are possible. The Storm Prediction Center even has marginal risk for isolated thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts for parts of West-Central NJ and Eastern PA. Stay tuned for updates on our social media accounts today. Premium members, check back for more updates on this system on the main dashboard today, as well. Skies will clear later tonight, as this system moves out of the region. Some other highlights for the next few days:

Sunday Evening Overview: Showers late tonight, colder drier mid-week

After a beautiful, blustery day, winds will begin to diminish this evening. Then clouds will increase tonight as a weak clipper low approaches the Great Lakes. While moisture will be limited, some showers from this system are likely over parts of the region late tonight and into early Monday morning. Especially just northwest of NYC, where better forcing, just north of the low track, could even support a period of moderate rain. Temperatures will fall into middle 40s to lower 50s much of the region overnight.

Then clouds will clear for more sunshine, behind the clipper later Monday morning and afternoon. It will become breezy again with drier northwest winds. But winds will be as strong as this past weekend. Sunshine will help temperatures reach into the upper 50s to lower 60s. But a colder airmass will begin arriving tomorrow night with temperatures dropping into 30s and 40s over the  region. Some other highlights through midweek:

Evening roundup: Unsettled, humid airmass settles in

Humidity is on the rise today, and the increased atmospheric moisture content led to the development of showers and storms throughout the area this afternoon. This will be the story of the next few days, as atmospheric disturbances provide sufficient lift for the development of precipitation within a moist and moderately unstable environment. While no organized severe weather is anticipated, the moisture in the atmosphere and the lift for precipitation will be enough to trigger showers and thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours and lightning with localized flooding. As a mid level atmospheric trough deepens over the Northeast US mid-week, a weak coastal storm system will develop and result in an increase in the coverage and intensity of showers and storms. All of the news isn’t bad, however — the system departs by late week and the weekend looks to again by quite pleasant and warm. Some highlights from around the meteorological community are included below:

  • Showers and thunderstorms will remain possible through this evening, with a localized threat for flooding. Lightning and heavy rain will also be possible in any thunderstorms. Temperatures will remain warm overnight, with humidity remaining high as well.
  • These showers and storms may continue through Wednesday, as a low pressure area develops nearby. Increased atmospheric lifting is indicated on most operational guidance, suggesting the potential for a period of steady precipitation on Wednesday.
  • Tonight, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft will send a signal back to earth — signifying whether it made its trip past Pluto safely. It will also send new, high resolution of the planet like we have never seen before.
