PM Premium Update: Unsettled weather lies ahead

It so often works this way, but it never gets old: Torrential rain and heavy thunderstorms one day give way to beautiful blue skies and drier air the next. Today was the latter in the sequence of days, but there is a flaw in the design of appreciating such a thing; the repetitiveness that lies ahead signals an unsettled pattern will continue. Yes, stormy days again appear on the horizon in the not-so-distant future, and the atmospheric pattern doesn’t look to let up.

Forecast models are in rather good agreement regarding the overall evolution of the pattern, suggestive that multiple disturbances will swing through the Mississippi Valley and Northeast States over the next several days. And while that my not necessarily mean a washout for the area, it will mean continued opportunities at precipitation and a lack of steady warmth. This comes as bad news for those who have been longing for summer’s heat to arrive.

PM Roundup: Changeable weather ahead of cold front

While forecast models initially suggested clouds and showers for much of the second half of this weekend, sensible weather conditions turned out to be quite pleasant. Warm ocean waters can partially be thanked for that, as even east winds weren’t able to advect in a cold and damp marine layer. Most notably, showers and thunderstorms stayed away from our area for the most part — leading to pleasant conditions on both Saturday and Sunday. An elongated cold front will finally make its approach to the area late Monday into Tuesday, with cooler and less humid air arriving behind it. In the meantime, changeable weather is expected ahead of it on Monday. Highs will again be in the 80’s, and after some early clouds, the sun will return — with scattered showers and storms by afternoon and evening. Some highlights of the weather over the next few days are included below:

  • The weather will remain warm, with dew points back into the 60’s, on Sunday evening. Overnight, some clouds and showers may push inland from the ocean waters as surface winds turn easterly.
  • Monday will feature partly cloudy skies after some early clouds. Temperatures and dew points will again be high. A few scattered showers and storms are possible during the afternoon and evening hours.
  • A cold front approaches Monday Night into Tuesday. Models are inconsistent with its timing — some take it through the area early Tuesday, others delay it until Tuesday afternoon. Regardless, cooler air will be on the way by Tuesday Night into Wednesday with lower humidity values as well.

PM Update: Beautiful weather continues, autumn arrives

Monday was one of the most beautiful weather-days in recent memory and, fittingly, autumn will officially arrive tonight at 10:30pm. Temperatures on Monday reached only into the upper 60’s (lower 70’s in some spots) and the low humidity kept things very comfortable. There was even a bit of a chill in the air at times, as a dry west-northwesterly breeze blew during the afternoon. Autumn will arrive officially tonight just shortly after 10:30pm Eastern.

Sunset tonight will be due west — as the autumnal equinox occurs. Tonight, the sun can be seen a “zenith” before its rays shift into the southern hemisphere for the rest of the year. That means that starting tomorrow, until the middle of winter, the sun will continue to set farther and farther to the south on the horizon. And yes, it also means we’ll be losing much more daylight each day moving forward. In fact, by this time next month, we will have lost a full two hours of daylight at a pace of 2 minutes and 40 seconds lost per day.

PM Update: Gorgeous weather continues, 80 degrees Sunday

While the first day of Fall is technically not until Tuesday, September 23rd, we have already had a lovely taste of fall and this should continue for the foreseeable future. In the wake of yesterday’s rain, an area of high pressure has filtered in, leading to sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. Some cumulus clouds are forming to the west as evidenced in the latest satellite — but those will not be producing any rain.

With clear skies and calm winds tonight, temperatures should fall quickly into the 50s, and perhaps into the 40s in the coldest spots.

Moving forward to tomorrow, the weather looks very similar today — but with perhaps a few more clouds and a touch warmer — with temperatures in the mid 70s. Winds shifting a bit more northwesterly as a high pressure system approaches will allow for a tad more downsloping flow, explaining the warming. On Thursday night, the high pressure will pass directly to our north, shifting the winds to the north and then the northeast, which will help to make conditions relatively chilly on Thursday night and Friday.
