Additional showers and thunderstorms expected Thursday

To the shock of absolutely nobody, showers and thunderstorms are again anticipated today. This will be the third straight day with a risk of severe weather in the Northern Mid Atlantic states. While the risk for widespread severe thunderstorms will be a bit lower than it was on Tuesday and Wednesday, a threat for heavy rain and localized flooding will exist.

The threat for storms is being driven by another atmospheric disturbance which is set to approach the region later today. Instability is expected to redevelop across Southeast Pennsylvania, New Jersey and parts of Southeast New York by this afternoon. With strong wind shear in place, thunderstorms that do develop will be able to organize.

Slight Risk for severe storms today, gusty winds possible

Showers and thunderstorms are likely to form in the Northeast later this afternoon, as a low pressure system moves through Southeast Canada and parts of Northern New England. Several of the storm could be strong or severe, with the potential for torrential rain, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning. While the threat for severe storms appears focused over Pennsylvania and interior New York State, some strong and severe storms may also leak towards the Lower Hudson Valley and NYC Metro later today.

The Storm Prediction Center has accordingly placed much of the aforementioned area in a “Slight Risk” for severe thunderstorms later today, including parts of Central and Northern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley and the western fringes of the NYC Metro.

AM Update: Calm start, but transitional weather ahead

Good morning and Happy Monday to you all! As you make your way out the door this morning, you’ll notice a change to the sensible weather conditions in place throughout the majority of the Northeast states. You can thank a strengthening south/southeasterly flow for that — it has replaced the cooler, northwest breeze with a warmer and slightly more humid airmass. Warmer and more humid air will advect into the Northeast states for the remainder of today.

Near the coast, these southeasterly winds have already resulted in the presence of some stratus clouds along the shores of Long Island and even parts of New Jersey — with some localized fog in other locales as well. This will burn off as the day goes on, but the progression of disturbances in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere will bring more unsettled weather into the picture by this afternoon.

Monday Overview: Hot again, strong storms possible late

The heat is back on, and it’s showing no signs of letting up. After a hot day on Sunday, Monday looks likely to be several degrees warmer throughout much of the area. High temperatures will approach the middle and upper 90’s, especially away from the area coasts. Heat index values in the upper 90’s, occasionally near 100, will make it feel oppressive at times.

In addition to the heat, a threat of strong to severe thunderstorms exists during the late afternoon and evening. This will be especially true across western portions of the forecast area. The Storm Prediction Center has placed western parts of New Jersey and Southeast New York in a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms on Monday afternoon and evening. Some highlights below:
