First snowfall of the season for the Northeast this weekend

About two weeks ago, it became clear that the weather pattern was set to undergo a significant shift. After many weeks of warmth, a reshuffle was underway in the Pacific Ocean, and the downstream effects of this would lead to colder air with a more wintry pattern in the North-Central and Northeast United States. Two weeks and many forecasts later, here we are. The first snowfall of the winter is set to fall in the Northeast states this weekend, including the metropolitan areas of Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford and Boston.

Forecast models, for all of their benefits, were not keen to signal the potential for snow this weekend until about 24 hours ago. Forecasters had been monitoring this potential quite closely, but a snowfall of any significance always seemed like a long shot in the Northeast States. On Thursday morning, however, it became clear that a significant trend was underway, and forecast model guidance quickly began changing the evolution of the storm system during the weekend ahead.

3/18 Late AM All Zones Update: Snowfall Threat Fizzles Out for This Weekend

Low pressure over the Great Lakes today transfers to another low developing off the Virginia coast, along a stalled frontal boundary with high pressure to the north by tonight. Some isentropic lift and moisture streaming off the Atlantic will cause more little more precipitation to develop by this afternoon, near this front. Especially over Northern NJ, NYC and Western Long Island. Areas further northeast and southwest, will likely see far less precipitation fall for the afternoon.

3/17 All Zones Early Afternoon Update on Potential Snowfall This Weekend

Today will be a beautiful day, with lots of sunshine for much of the day. The large closed upper-level low influence our weather for last few days, will finally be lifting further north over the Canadian Maritimes. This will lead to rising mid-level heights the over region , allowing for temperatures to warm up into upper 30s to lower 40s for highs this afternoon. While these temperatures may feel a little more comfortable, compared the last few days, they are still well below normal for this time of year.

AM All Zones Update: Significant Snowfall Expected Late Tonight into Thursday

A warm front will likely make little progress northward this morning, before a cold front moves through during the midday hours today. Drier northwest winds behind this front, will cause low clouds and fog to clear for more sunshine later this morning and afternoon. Temperatures will still rise into the 50s and some even lower 60s this afternoon, with a downslope flow. Then a colder airmass will begin moving into the region tonight.
