Weekend Outlook: Warming Trend & Scattered T-Storms in the Northeast

Happy Friday! Overall a pretty decent summer weekend is on the way for outdoor plans, with just a little more heat and humidity. But there may some isolated or scattered showers and thunderstorm by Saturday night or Sunday, that you may take cover for briefly.

First for today, mostly sunny skies are expected, as high pressure remains in control. But it will begin shifting offshore, winds become more south-southeast. This will allow areas just inland to reach the middle to upper 80s, while areas near the coast remain a little cooler.  A beautiful warm evening is on tap, then partly cloudy skies are expected overnight, as a warm front with some showers passes well to north of the region. Lows overnight will be in the upper 50s over the Interior to upper 60s or around 70 over urban areas. Read more

Weekly Planner: Record heat to start the week

Good morning! What a wonderful weekend that was. After seven straight weekends with measurable rainfall, we finally broke the streak – and the heat built into the Northeast states on Sunday, with temperatures rising into the lower 90s. The heat will actually peak today, with temperatures expected to approach record highs for the day, in the middle 90s. 850mb temperatures (about 5000 feet above our heads) will actually be a bit cooler closer 19 to 20 C today, than what models had back last week. But the surface temperatures will warm as southwesterly winds increase.

In addition to the increasing surface temperature will come rising dew points, resulting in relative humidity values much higher than they were on Sunday. Heat Index values are expected to rise into the upper 90s and eventually near or over 100°F in many spots by this afternoon, especially over Northeast New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley.

Monday Briefing: Blizzard in the Plains, unsettled weather East

Good morning, everyone! A new week begins today with much warmer weather in the Eastern United States, particularly the Northeast states where temperatures are running well above average. This is obviously a major change compared to what has been experienced there over the past several weeks. Much of this can be attributed to warmer, Pacific air that has become entrenched in the Eastern United States over the past few days. Temperatures are expected to run 10-20 degrees above normal averages on both Monday and Tuesday!

Meanwhile, the weather will become increasingly unsettled. Increasing moisture and lift in the atmosphere will lead to drizzle and unsettled conditions across the Eastern United States. This issue will be exacerbated by the presence of a strong low pressure system, which is leading to the development of a blizzard across the Northern Plains. The low pressure is bringing warm air to the East, but much more significant weather out west – where very heavy snow and significant travel impacts are anticipated.
