Premium weekly outlook: Very warm start, cooler air to follow

The anomalous warmth we spoke about last week? It’s finally here! Sunshine will mix with clouds occasionally this afternoon, but by and large, high pressure will remain in control of the weather throughout the Northeast United States. Forecast model guidance suggests that 850mb temperatures of 12-14+ C will surge northward toward the Mid Atlantic states, with southwest winds drawing in warmer air at the surface. Temperatures will rise in the upper 70’s to near 80 this afternoon, with the possibility of some clouds later this afternoon and evening as a weak disturbance passes by. Otherwise, clearing is expected later tonight underneath high pressure and light winds. The interior valleys will drop into the 50’s, but this will be much warmer than the past several nights. Radiational cooling and warm air advecting in the mid levels could cause moisture to be trapped in the low levels — leading to low clouds and patchy fog in spots through Tuesday morning.

Friday Overview: Unsettled Weather Continues…Watching Hurricane Matthew

A large cut-off low over the Ohio Valley continues to cause some unsettled, cooler weather over the region. So far high pressure positioned to the northeast, has keep heavier rainfall over southwest of NYC metro. But with a strengthening low-level easterly jet, more band rains are likely to move in from the ocean later today. Some of this rain, may be heavy at times. Which could lead to some ponding of water on area roadways and some flooding in poor-drainage and low-lying areas.

Wednesday Overview: Hermine still hanging around

You may have noticed some periods of squally, windy showers last night. Yes, that was actually from Hermine (or the remnants of it, anyway) — the system that we all just want to go away keeps finding a way to hang around. A blocking pattern captured the storm and allowed it to come back towards the area, fortunately  in a much-weakened state. But the weakening and transition to extra tropical in nature allowed some rain bands to expand away from the center of the storm, and back in to our area from the east.

The same general theme will continue on Wednesday, though with the storm continuing to weaken, the rain bands will be lessening in coverage. Some day-time heating may still try to enhance a few rain bands, but they will continue to be isolated to scattered in coverage and there may not be much at all west of I-95. We may see breaks of sun again — particularly for inland areas — as a large ridge builds into the area. This large ridge would be giving our area a heatwave had it not been for Hermine.

Weekend Overview: Hot, unsettled pattern takes hold

After strong and severe thunderstorms brought fairly widespread wind damage reports to the area on Thursday, many woke up expecting much cooler air this morning. They were wrong: Temperatures remained in the 70’s and even low 80’s in some spots overnight. Hot weather is again expected on Friday, with highs in the middle 90’s, and it may even be warmer than Thursday near the coast. The culprit? West offshore winds, keeping any seabreeze boundaries right near the coast.

The good news is that the ridiculous, nearly tropical airmass with dew points near 75 will be ushered out of the area by these westerly winds. Although high temperatures will reach into the 90’s, dew points closer to the middle 60’s are likely throughout the area, which will feel like a bit of a relief. A few scattered showers are possible Friday afternoon, but overall, calm and hot weather will be in control. The rest of the weekend looks likely to remain transitional and unsettled. We’ve got the highlights below:
