Thursday Overview: Unsettled start, nicer finish

The long stretch of sunshine and pleasant weather has ended! Well, sort of. A disturbance passing by this morning will bring periods of rain to the area, especially areas south and west of New York City. While clouds and showers will stick around for parts of the morning, clearing is expected as the day progresses.

Forecast models show the cloud deck meandering near the city itself, with partly to mostly cloudy conditions over Long Island and Connecticut. Meanwhile, much of Central and Southern NJ will battle showers until the late morning or afternoon hours. Once this disturbances slides seaward, however, clearing is expected throughout the area.

Wednesday Overview: Unsettled, then cold again

Freeze Warnings have been issued on two consecutive nights, both Monday and Tuesday, as temperatures fell into the upper 20’s and lower 30’s throughout the area. A warming trend is underway today, with high temperatures rising into the mid to upper 40’s during the afternoon hours. This storm system will bring periods of rain with embedded thunderstorms to the area on Thursday, before cold air follows the storm system into the weekend. The latest and greatest information is all included below:

Cool start, unsettled trend by midweek

The week will begin, to the disappointment of many, with colder weather behind a front which shifted through the area on Sunday morning. The anomalously warm, and almost spring-like, airmass which settled into the area during the latter half of last week and this weekend will have been shunted southward. Behind the front will come cooler, less humid air. Monday morning is likely to be quite crisp, with low temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s away from the coast and in the mid 30’s even in the city.

The week will be marked by a transitional weather pattern, beginning with cold air and ending with a gradual warming trend. In between, periods of rain and unsettled weather are expected during the middle part of the week. A low pressure system moving through the Mississippi Valley and eventually reforming off the East Coast will be to blame, with increasing moisture and lift for precipitation by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Unsettled weather, rain likely on Tuesday

Tropical Depression Twelve formed in the Southwest Atlantic on Sunday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center, and will continue moving north-westward until this evening when it will begin a northeast turn out to sea. The effects from the system, however indirect they may be, will be felt in our area on Tuesday. Tropical moisture feeding northward and interacting with a mid level disturbance over the Mid Atlantic states will bring a heightened likelihood of unsettled weather.

Pleasant conditions are expected to continue on Monday, as the mid level disturbance will still be hundreds of miles away from our area. But by later Monday evening, high clouds will stream toward the area with the approaching system, and showers will begin moving in from the southwest by later Monday Night.
