Tuesday Briefing: Stormy midweek, heat wave follows

A stormy and very hot pattern will take control this week. After several pleasant days in a row, temperatures and humidity are on the rise today. Late tonight into Wednesday, the weather will take an unsettled turn. A few disturbances will move through the Northeast states, leading to the development of showers and thunderstorms.

The first of these will pass through the area very early on Wednesday morning. Areas of clouds, showers and storms are all expected. After clearing during the day on Wednesday, with very hot temperatures, additional rounds of storms are likely. These will continue through Thursday afternoon. Thereafter, heat and humidity will become the main story. A heat wave is likely in NYC and NJ this week.

We’ve got the breakdown on what to expect over the next few days, as always. Here are our five briefing points this morning.

Briefing Points | Heat Wave Expected Late Week:

  1. The heat and humidity builds today. Temperatures will reach the lower 90’s throughout the area and Heat Index values may climb higher than that. Stay hydrated, and as always keep a close eye on sensitive groups.
  2. Unsettled, stormy weather is expected from Wednesday morning through Thursday. A few rounds of storms are likely, the first one coming early on Wednesday and bringing clouds and showers to the entire region.
  3. Another round is on the way from later Wednesday into Thursday. A few stronger storms are possible during this round of storms, which will continue into Thursday afternoon as well.
  4. Oppressive and dangerous heat then builds in from Friday into Saturday.  Temperatures will approach or exceed 100 degrees, Heat Index values will approach or exceed 110 degrees. This heat looks to be the real deal: Follow heat-related safety precautions for yourself, family and friends – and pets!
  5. The heat continues into early next week. Additional rounds of showers and storms are likely during that time – a few of these could be strong or severe as well.

Additional details are coming your way today in regards to the heat. You can also visit our Heat Safety page for the latest information on how to prepare.
