Wednesday Briefing: NYC Heat wave begins today, storms also likely

A heat wave will begin today in NYC, with temperatures expected to rise into the mid and upper 90’s. The combination of temperature and humidity will lead to heat index values near 105 degrees. This level of heat is dangerous for all groups – but especially for children, the elderly, and pets. Keep a very close eye on neighbors and limit exposure to the sun. The worst of the heat will come during the mid afternoon, specifically between 1pm and 4pm.

In addition to oppressive heat, showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon. Some of the storms are likely to be strong and severe. Multiple rounds of storms are likely, with the first round of scattered activity expected by late afternoon. A threat for heavy rain will evolve during the evening, continuing into Thursday.

Multiple weather hazards are likely today. There’s never been a better time to check out our five briefing points:

  1. Oppressive heat is expected this afternoon (Wednesday). High temperatures will reach the middle to upper 90’s. The combination of heat and humidity will bring Heat Index values over 105 degrees in many areas. Be sure to review your Heat Safety tips in advance of the heat. Know what to do in the event that someone you know has a heat related illness, or if you lose power during the heat.
  2. Strong to severe thunderstorms are likely later. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in Slight Risk for severe weather. Storms are likely to produce heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds.
  3. Heavy rain is also likely tonight. A complex of storms will impact the region during this time. The National Weather Service has placed the entire NYC Area in a Flash Flood Watch.
  4. We will get a bit of a break on Thursday. Showers and clouds in the morning will lead to humid, but cooler weather. Temperatures will top out in the 80’s.
  5. Dangerous heat is expected from Friday into Saturday. Temperatures near 100 degrees and high humidity will lead to Heat Index values over 110 degrees at time. This level of heat is dangerous. Limit outdoor exposure and stay hydrated at all times.
