Prolonged stretch of warm, dry weather expected in NYC

An expansive high pressure system will build over New England beginning today, leading to a prolonged period warm and dry weather in the Northeast. Temperatures are likely to average a few degrees above normal over the next week, with very little threat of substantial precipitation or significant storms.

This same high pressure is responsible for punting Hurricane Humberto out to sea – so we’ve got two reasons to be thankful for its appearance! The pleasant weather will begin today, with high temperatures in the 70’s and low humidity. There’s even an Autumn feel to the air this morning, especially in New England where temperatures have fallen into the 40’s.

Temperatures will gradually moderate as we go through the week, and the next 5 to 7 days should average above normal throughout the entire Northeast states. Average temperatures have fallen into the 70’s by this time of year, though, so temperatures a few degrees above normal only brings the mercury to the upper 70’s or low 80’s at best.

The warmth will persist through this weekend, with – again – very little chance of substantial precipitation or hazardous weather. The pattern may finally begin to change a bit by early next week, when a few disturbances may swing by. But forecast model guidance suggests their impact will be relatively unimpressive.

Fall foliage beginning to expand and intensify

During our trip to New England this weekend, it was abundantly clear that fall foliage was getting ready to intensify – especially from the Green Mountains of Vermont northward into New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The latest fall foliage reports and webcams suggest that colors are beginning to intensify and expand across these regions. With warm, dry weather anticipated over the next several days, there could be a rapid expansion of color in those regions. We are currently forecasting fall foliage to increase significantly over the next seven days. Those heading up to view the foliage this weekend are in for a heck of a show!

Stay tuned for further foliage updates over the next few days.
