Dorian strengthens, expected to approach Florida as a powerful hurricane

Update 2:00pm: The National Hurricane Center has confirmed that Dorian strengthened to a Category 1 Hurricane this afternoon. Maximum sustained winds are now near 75mph as the storm passes near St Thomas.

Additional strengthening is forecast late this week as the storm moves into the Bahamas. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting Dorian to be a Major Hurricane as it approaches the Florida Coast this weekend.

Tropical Storm Erin formed off the East Coast late on Tuesday evening. The storm is expected to track northeastward, posing no threat to land. It is expected to bring some rough surf and swells along parts of the Northeast US coast through the end of the week.

Dorian approaching Puerto Rico, heading toward Florida this weekend

Tropical Storm Dorian will approach Puerto Rico in the next 24 hours, possibly making landfall, before continuing toward the Bahamas and eventually Florida later this week. Dorian continues to battle dry air and wind shear today, with maximum sustained winds at 50 miles per hour as of the 5pm update from the National Hurricane Center.

Meteorological summer will end warmer, wetter than normal in NYC

New York City will finish meteorological summer with above normal temperatures and above normal precipitation when the unofficial season ends on August 31st. Temperatures from June 1st through August 27th averaged 1 to 3 degrees above normal throughout the New York City Metro, while precipitation ended 3 to 6 inches above average. Official numbers will be released by the National Weather Service next week.
