Thursday Briefing: Sunny, calm weather for Labor Day weekend

The last weekend of meteorological summer is here, and the weather will cooperate for a proper sendoff. High pressure will build in to New England today, with lower dew points and lots of sunshine expected. The pleasant weather will continue through Saturday and Sunday.

High temperatures are expected to average in the low 80’s in New York City and surrounding areas, with Friday likely to be the warmest day of the bunch. No rain is expected through Sunday evening.

The next chance for precipitation will come on Monday – Labor Day itself – when a few showers and storms are possible yet again. Models have flip flopped in regards to the intensity of the disturbance, but at the very least the likelihood of showers and storms will increase. We will then have to watch for the remnants of Dorian toward the end of the week.

Speaking of Dorian, the storm continues to churn in the Atlantic today and is heading for the Bahamas. It’s a Category 1 hurricane as of this morning, but is expected to strengthen further today – and even further once it moves into the true waters of the Bahamas. The National Hurricane Center suggests the storm will be a Major Hurricane by the time it approaches the Florida coastline Sunday into Monday.

  • Most of Labor Day weekend looks pleasant, so expect crowds at the area beaches for the final summer sendoff.
  • The next chance for showers and storms comes on Monday, although we aren’t anticipating a washout.
  • Hurricane Dorian is a Category 1 storm this morning, and is expected to continue to strengthen as it moves toward Florida. The National Hurricane Center says it’ll be a major hurricane on approach this weekend.
  • We’ll be working on our website a bit more this weekend. If you see anything buggy or crazy, give us a shout.
