Wet weather returns to NYC through Thursday morning

Clouds will increase this afternoon as a dynamic storm system approaches the area from the west. Showers will become widespread by this evening, with periods of rain continuing through Thursday morning. Temperatures will drop considerably as the evening goes on. Clearing is anticipated by Thursday afternoon, with real-feel temperatures in the upper 20’s.

Wednesday began with reasonably calm and warm weather, but the winds of change are blowing clouds into the area this afternoon. Showers are expected to become more widespread as the day goes on, with periods of steady rain possibly by the afternoon hours. Latest model guidance indicates that showers should become steady after 5pm.

A big trough will dig into the Northeast US on Thursday leading to stormy conditions and very cold weather.

The unsettled weather is being driven by the development of a large storm system in New England. A deep trough will sink southward from Canada into the Northeast states, helping to strengthen a low pressure at the surface and draw colder air into the area.

The result will be unsettled weather with periods of rain from later Wednesday evening into Thursday. Winter weather is possible in the interior and higher elevations as this trough amplifies over the area. I think we can all agree that we’re thankful this cold air isn’t sinking southward into the NYC Metro. Aside from you crazy folk who wish for snow in April. Weird.

Here’s the forecast breakdown:

Wednesday Night: Rain will become more widespread throughout the area as a large storm system develops across the Northeast states. A low pressure center will develop off the coast and swing northward towards New England, helping for rain to expand in coverage. The rain may even mix with some wintry precipitation in the higher elevations of Northwest NJ and Northeast PA.

Thursday Morning: Steady rain will gradually end from west to east, but a few showers could continue especially near the coast. Light rain and drizzle should begin to move out of the NYC Metro Area by 11am or so. Temperatures will be much cooler, only in the 30’s. The winds ill make it feel more like the upper 20’s.

Thursday Afternoon/Evening: Westerly winds will usher in unusually cold air for this time of year, with temperatures 20 degrees below normal. The winds will make it feel more like the teens outside. April will not be off to a very friendly start

Friday: Improving weather is expected, but temperatures will remain quite cool and well below normal for this time of year again. Expect more sunshine with highs in the 40’s throughout he majority of the area.
