Rain, blustery winds expected in NYC through Saturday

Another coastal storm will impact the area starting tonight, with periods of rain and gusty winds expected to continue through Saturday. While not as strong as the last coastal storm, this storm will still pack a bit of a punch. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the NYC Metro and Long Island through Saturday.

NAM model showing steady rain in NYC on Friday evening.

Friday will start off relatively calm with clouds increasing throughout the morning. Dew points will rise as the day goes on and conditions will become noticeably more humid. Gradually, showers will spread northward through New Jersey and towards the NYC Metro. Stready rainfall is expected to begin around 5pm.

Periods of steady rain will then continue through tonight. We are not anticipating a widespread flooding threat, but some localized flooding is a possibility especially in areas that were hit hard with the nor’easter earlier this week. In addition, winds will begin to ramp up tonight.

The combination of the low pressure system developing offshore and a high pressure to our north will create a pressure gradient, enhancing onshore flow and strengthening winds tonight. This will be especially impactful along the coast, where this onshore flow will not only cause strong winds but also the possibility of coastal/tidal flooding. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the NYC Metro and most coastal locations through Saturday as a result.

Strong winds are expected along the area coasts with an onshore flow also causing coastal flooding through Saturday morning.

After a break in the action Saturday morning, with briefly drier conditions, another round of steady and occasionally heavy rainfall is expected on Saturday afternoon. Several hours of damp, blustery conditions are expected as this second round moves through. Finally, by Saturday evening, conditions should begin to improve.

If there is one silver lining in this rain and wind filled forecast, it’s the fact that Sunday will turn out quite nice. We anticipate cooler conditions with a bit of a northwest breeze, but the sun should be shining during part of the day and no precipitation is anticipated.

Calm conditions are also expected next week, with temperatures trending cooler by the middle to end of the week as colder air comes surging down from Canada. High temperatures by later next week may only reach the lower 50’s.
