Unsettled weather returns to NYC on Friday

As we type this, the NYC Metro is in a stretch of unusually warm, beautiful November weather. High temperatures the past few days have reached the middle to upper 60’s – 70’s in some spots – and sunshine has been plentiful. Unfortunately, the pleasant weather will come to an end on Friday.

The first signs of the changing weather pattern will come on Thursday when temperatures will average a few degrees cooler (in the lower 60’s). Clouds will increase from the late morning into the afternoon as moisture spreads northward ahead of an approaching cold front.

Showers are expected to begin impacting the area late Thursday night into Friday morning. Unsettled conditions are expected to continue until the afternoon on Friday. A period of steady to occasionally heavy rainfall is expected as the front crosses the area. A few thunderstorms can’t be ruled out, either.

The good news is that this system is moving fairly quickly. Clearing is anticipated by later Friday evening, with improved weather through Friday Night. Uncertainty increases again on Saturday as an upper-level low moves over the area. It appears possible that showers will impact the area again on Saturday afternoon and evening, but the coverage and intensity of these showers is a major uncertainty.

For now, the expectation is that after a sunny start, clouds will increase on Saturday afternoon and showers will become fairly widespread throughout the area yet again. These may continue through Saturday evening before wrapping up early Sunday. Steady rainfall appears more likely the further north one travels from the NYC Metro.

Improved weather is likely on Sunday, but it will be much cooler. High temperatures will only reach the lower 50’s and blustery west/northwest winds are anticipated. Cooler than normal weather is expected to continue into the middle part of next week, with high temperatures ranging from the upper 40’s to lower 50’s.

Enjoy the warmer than normal temperatures over the next few days – with the unsettled weather anticipated this weekend and a colder pattern looming in the extended range, it may be the last we see of the pleasant and warm conditions for quite some time.
