Early indications suggest rain in NYC for an astounding seventh weekend in a row

Rain has fallen in New York City for six weekends in a row, and it doesn’t look like we’ll have any problem getting to seven. Recent model data indicates that the seemingly cyclic weather pattern will persist, with strong hints at a coastal storm and rainfall this coming Saturday, October 21st.

Yup, it’s going to rain in NYC again this weekend

The beat goes on. Despite the gorgeous weather on tap for the next few days, forecast model guidance is strongly hinting at the potential for another coastal storm this weekend. The potential exists for periods of rain, wind and localized flooding as the storm system evolves from Saturday into Sunday. 

The majority of this week will be characterized by comfortable temperatures and pleasant conditions. High pressure has nudged into the area today, with an upper level low spinning to our north and keeping a flow of crisp, comfortable air angled towards the region. Consider it our prize for the unsettled and damp weekend that we endured – but a warning sign for what’s still yet to come.

Flood Watch issued for NYC from Friday through Saturday

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the entire NYC Metro from Friday evening through Saturday. Locally heavy rain is expected to produce the potential for flooding in some areas. 1-2″ of rain is currently expected but locally higher amounts up to 4″ are possible. 

Right off the bat, it’s worth noting that this event is not similar to the one which brought significant flooding to NYC last Friday. However, it is still expected to be impactful with periods of steady or heavy rain and flooding – especially in poor drainage or low lying areas. The heaviest rain currently looks likely to fall from the late morning into early afternoon hours on Saturday.
