More snow possible in NYC on Friday

Fresh off of breaking a 701 day streak without 1″ of snow, another winter storm is heading for the NYC Metro. Forecast models agree that a weak coastal storm will pass to our south on Friday, with enough lift and moisture in the atmosphere for light snowfall accumulations.

Similar to the last storm, snowfall intensity is expected to remain relatively light. Most model guidance suggests that snow will begin on Friday morning and continue throughout the day, oscillating between light and moderate intensity. Temperatures will be quite cold, so snow is likely to stick to all surfaces very quickly.

NAM model's simulated radar at 2pm on Friday showing snow throughout the area.

Models diverge on how the system will look during the early afternoon hours, with some showing a band of moderate to heavy intensity snow moving into Central NJ and towards NYC. Should this occur, locally higher snowfall totals would be possible. If not, a general 1 to 3 inches of snowfall appears likely throughout the majority of the forecast area.

Snow will wrap up during the evening hours on Friday (probably around 8pm). Some impacts to both the morning and evening commute are possible, but the light intensity of the snowfall is likely to allow road crews time to manage the system. We aren’t expecting major or widespread travel delays.

Still, it’s another winter storm…so prepare to take it slow out there. We’ll be closely monitoring the latest weather model guidance in the next 12-24 hours to see if that more intense band of snow does make an appearance. If confidence increases in that band, estimated snowfall totals could go up as we approach the event.

We’ll have a video and much more on the way later this afternoon!
