NYC Area Forecast: More rain on the way this weekend

Cold and dry weather remains dominant today, as high pressure continues to control the weather pattern throughout the Northeast states. This trend will continue into the early part of Friday, although atmospheric heights will be rising – suggesting a moderating trend in temperatures over time.

A weak clipper system is then set to approach the area on Friday, with the potential for light snow or mixed precipitation in the interior.

Models are in good agreement that any impacts from the weak clipper disturbance will be insignificant for most, but the Interior may still see some light snow. This refers specifically to areas such as Northeast PA, Southeast NY, Northern NJ and Connecticut. A few hours of light snow in those locations on Friday afternoon could lead to some very  light accumulations of snow.

Elsewhere, it’ll just be showers – and that includes NYC – as the disturbance passes by. The more notable threat for weather impacts will come on Saturday. As a stronger storm system deepens in the Great Lakes, moisture will surge northward towards the Mid-Atlantic and New England.

Projected rainfall totals through Saturday.

Projected rainfall totals through Saturday.

Steady and occasionally heavy rainfall is likely from Saturday evening into Sunday morning, starting as early as 6pm and continuing overnight. Forecast models suggest. Most forecast models suggest moderate rainfall totals with storm total rainfall amounts of just under 1″ by the time all is said and done.

The good news in all of this? The system moves by on Sunday and before the frontal boundary comes through, temperatures could rise into the 50’s. This will feel downright tropical compared to the cold, dense air we’ve been sitting in for the past several days.

That’s about where the good news ends – as winter looks to return with a vengeance next week. We’ll leave that discussion for a more technical post later today.

Have a wonderful Thursday!
