Weekly Briefing: Prolonged heat wave expected in NYC

Here comes summer: A heat wave is expected in NYC this week.

After a slow start to the season, with lots of rain and clouds, the weather has warmed significantly over the past week or two. This will come to a climax this week, when temperatures will reach near or over 90 degrees for several consecutive days. The heat will build as the week goes on, peaking by the end of the week and weekend. On Friday and Saturday in particular, forecast models suggest that temperatures could exceed 95 degrees and heat index values could exceed 100.

A blend of forecast models from the National Weather Service suggests temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s by late week in the NYC Area.

In addition to the heat and humidity, we’re expecting the potential for storms on a few days. Tuesday in particular looks to feature the potential for showers and thunderstorms, as well as heavy rain, thanks to the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. Here are the five main things to watch for during the week ahead:

  1. The heat will build starting on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will rise over 90 degrees and the humidity will increase as well. As always, limit outdoor activities and keep a close eye on children and the elderly.
  2. Through midweek, the weather will stay calm. Shower and thunderstorm chances will remain minimal until at least Wednesday evening.
  3. From late Wednesday into Thursday, the potential for widespread showers and thunderstorms exists. You can thank the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry for this. The timing and intensity of this disturbance remains somewhat uncertain, but it does look likely that there will be unsettled weather around.
  4. The heat dials up significantly on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures in the mid levels of the atmosphere will approach 20 degrees C above normal. The potential exists for oppressive conditions, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s and heat index values of 110.
  5. Heat looks likely to continue into the latter part of the weekend and perhaps early the following week. At that point, the weather pattern should shift again allowing for a cool down.

We’ve got much more coming your way on Monday, including a detailed breakdown on what to expect from the heat. For now, stay cool and enjoy your Monday!
