Fall foliage progressing quickly, peak color not far away in New England

The fall foliage display is becoming increasingly noticeable throughout New England, and peak colors are expected within the next 7 to 10 days. While the outburst of beautiful color is on schedule historically, it’s moving along at a much faster pace than it did in 2018.

Color remains low across most of the Mid Atlantic, including much of New Jersey and Long Island. However, an increase is expected over the next several days as cooler air moves southward from Canada and the airmass turns drier. Moderate color is likely in these areas by this weekend.

In New England, colors are progressing much more rapidly. This is typical for this time of year, but we are well ahead of the 2018 pace through October 1st. High color is already being observed in parts of the Catskills and Vermont Green Mountains, as well as in the White Mountains from New Hampshire toward Maine.

Changeable weather the next few days

The weather pattern has been warmer and drier than normal, but will change quite dramatically over the next few days. A front will sink southward through New England through the end of this week while providing ample rainfall chances. By the end of the week and weekend, temperatures will be significantly colder.

With overnight lows falling into the 30’s and 40’s throughout New England this weekend, and high temperatures remaining near or below normal, it appears likely that fall foliage will crescendo towards its peak in the next 7 to 10 days.

If you are planning a trip to New England to view the foliage, this upcoming weekend looks to be the real winner of the year, although vibrant colors may continue into next weekend (October 10-13) as well. Colors will also progress further south into the Mid Atlantic by that time.
