Colorful clouds could appear tonight after NASA rocket launch

NASA will launch a sounding rocket from it’s Wallops Island, VA facility tonight, and the result of intentional testing after the rocket deploys could bring a colorful cloud into the night sky from Virginia to Long Island.

Between 7 and 9pm (no specific time has yet been set), NASA will launch the suborbital rocket. Approximately 6 minutes after launch, the sounding rocket will deploy four sub-payloads containing “mixtures of barium and strontium”.

Wednesday to bring another gem, another launch

The weather on Tuesday was amazingly comfortable, with plenty of sun and a light breeze. When we said earlier this week that the weather would be incredible this entire work week, we weren’t kidding. Another gem of a day is expected on Wednesday, as highs will moderate only a few degrees towards the lower to mid 70’s. A Canadian high pressure system will remain in control through Friday, and highs will rise a little bit each day as the airmass modifies. But clear skies and light winds are expected once again on Wednesday — making the midweek day especially pleasant. A chilly start can be expected once again for the morning commute on Wednesday, as lows will dip into the upper 30’s and 40’s in the suburbs for the second straight morning.

NASA imagery captures massive CME

As benign and inactive as the weather pattern has been the last several days in the NYC Area, the sun has been conjuring up some major developments. And it’s acting up again. On Monday a corona mass ejection, otherwise known as a CME, occurred on the edge of the sun. CME’ s are common during the suns more active periods — one of which we are heading into. The more active solar cycle has been underwhelming thus far, but NASA was able to capture Monday’s CME with an incredible high resolution video. Attached below, the video shows the CME erupting off the sun in a rolling wave — shooting billions of tons of particles into space at millions of miles per hour.
