1/21 All Zones AM Update on Significant Storm for Monday & Tuesday

As we discussed, previous article significant storm will impact region early next week. This storm will could turn into major Nor’easter with heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds, and some coastal flooding during the high tides. Even some snow and sleet is also possible for some of the Interior locations. More discussion on some details on each potential impacts below for the all the zones.

Rainfall: Some rain could arrive by Sunday night. But the steadiest and heaviest rainfall will be late morning/early afternoon on Monday through early Monday night, with strong low-level jet moving northward through the region. Then low pressure transfer from inland too off the coast, weakens and occludes, rain will be somewhat lighter and more intermittent late Monday night and Tuesday.

Sunday Overview: Warming Trend For Early This Week

A beautiful Autumn weekend continues today, with high pressure still in control. But a warming trend will start today with more southwest winds, as high pressure begins to shift further south and east of the region. Highs will be in the upper 60 to lower 70s with plenty of sunshine today. These temperatures are already slightly above normal for this time of year. Clouds will be on the increase tonight as a weakening cold front approaches the region.  Some isolated or widely scattered showers are possible later tonight and tomorrow morning.  But with limited lift and moisture, these will likely be on light side.

The cold front likely washout day during the day tomorrow, as ridge from the southwest, begins building over the region. Clouds should break for more sunshine by the afternoon and unseasonable warm airmass will be in the region with temperatures well above normal. West-southwesterly winds will cause temperatures to rise into middle to upper 70s to near 80 over many parts of the region tomorrow afternoon. Some other highlights, for this upcoming week:

Multi-hazard system will affect the area midweek

A large and intense low pressure system will form over the Mississippi River Valley and move northward toward the Ohio Valley and Southeast Canada this week, as a result of an impressive phase in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. In our area, two distinct areas of low pressure will actually impact our weather; the first from Tuesday into Tuesday Night, and the second from Wednesday into Thursday. Both will feature wildly differing weather conditions, with snow possible across the interior on Tuesday and then heavy rain, warm temperatures, and thunder on Wednesday Night from the second storm system.

Major storm likely to be more wet than white, this week

A large, powerful storm system is expected to develop from the Mississippi River Valley into the Ohio Valley during the early to middle part of this upcoming week, as a significant phase in the mid levels of the atmosphere occurs. A strong low pressure system will drive northward through the aforementioned areas, allowing a deep southerly flow to draw warm, moist air toward our area during the middle part of the week. Initially there might be enough for cold air around for some frozen precipitation at the onset. But eventually warmer temperatures with periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, and possibly even thunder, will be possible as the storm impacts our area.
