2/21 AM All Zones: Record Warmth Possible Thursday, Stormy Saturday?

Temperatures today will again be several degrees above normal for this of year. But some mid-high level clouds increasing out ahead of warm front approaching will likely keep highs a little lower then yesterday, in upper 40s to lower 50s.

Mostly cloudy skies are expected tonight, as the warm front and shortwave trough move through. Lift and moisture become more limited as they run into the upper-level ridging. But a few scattered light rain showers are still possible, especially northwest of NYC. Temperatures will likely only drop into the upper 30s to lower 40s tonight.

Public Analysis: Colder air intrudes this weekend, in a sea of warmth

After coming out of frigid airmass early this week, temperatures gradually moderated to above seasonal levels for mid-week period. This is due to more troughiness over the Western United States, and lack of high-latitude blocking, leading to more progressive pattern with a stronger Southeast ridge.

On the periphery of the ridge, the a more southwesterly flow will has allow for warmer airmass to move into Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. Meanwhile the storm track has shift well to our north and west due the Southeast ridge. This pattern continue will for the next few days. Another low passing over the Great Lakes will push a warm front with some rain likely through the region tonight. Then temperatures tomorrow could rise well into the 50s or even lower 60s, across the area as even warmer airmass moves into region.

Premium: Warming trend in the East will be short lived

Weather news this week has been centered around the presence of a large ridge, building into the Central United States. This ridge will reach eastward to the Ohio Valley, with tremendously warm temperatures surging from the desert southwest into the heart of the country. In the East, however — especially the Northeast — this warm air will be short lived. An active pattern throughout the Northern jet stream will keep the upper air pattern very active, and the amplification of the pattern will allow colder air to surge into Southeast Canada and the Northeast.

Much of this will be centered around a cold front, which will move through the Northeast US on Thursday afternoon and evening. Temperatures will warm up throughout the East on Wednesday and Thursday. Thereafter, on Thursday afternoon and evening, an  impressively strong system in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere will drop southward into Southeast Canada and eventually the Northeast, interacting with moisture and providing sufficient lift for heavy rain.
