Sun, warmer air return for midweek

A low pressure system scooting quickly off the coast of Long Island has kept some clouds and showers around early this morning, mainly over New York City and eastward through Long Island. Water vapor satellite imagery (pictured above) shows drier air moving in behind the aforementioned low pressure system, diving southward from New York State and Pennsylvania. The result will be clouds giving way to more sun by this afternoon, as the low pressure moves eastward well off the coast.

In addition to the drier air and northerly wind component this afternoon, warmer temperatures will move in aloft. Forecast models indicate 850hPa temperatures increasing from 12-14c this morning to 15-17c by this evening. High temperatures this afternoon will approach the middle to upper 80’s in many areas, and will be warm even down to the area beaches thanks to the north winds. What starts out as a cloudy day across the east end, will turn into a gem of a Tuesday for the majority of the forecast area. Enjoy!

Today: Partly to mostly cloudy skies will give way to plenty of sun, north winds, and highs in the middle to upper 80’s. A tremendous late-summer Tuesday is on the way. No weather hazards or weather-related travel impacts are expected.T

Tonight: Partly cloudy skies return, and pleasant weather is expected early. However, a few isolated showers cannot be ruled out in the late evening to overnight period. Low temperatures falling into the upper 60’s to lower 70’s.

PM Update: Overnight showers/storms likely

Pleasant weather, which had settled into the area over the last few days, will give way to more clouds this evening. A mix of sun and clouds had been the story today, but it had remained mostly dry throughout the area despite some widely scattered showers. However, a disturbance to our north — dropping south and east along the periphery of a mid level heat ridge over the Central US — has sparked an area of showers and thunderstorms over New York State and Northwest Pennsylvania.

Forecast models are at odds with the overnight storms and their impact on the forecast area. A low pressure system is forecast to develop along a weak frontal zone over New England by later this evening, which adds confidence to the continued southeastward motion of the showers and storms over New York State. That being said, some weakening is likely as instability is much less over New Jersey and Southeast New York than it is currently over New York State. This lends confidence to the fact that showers will impact the area later tonight, but strong/severe thunderstorms look unlikely.

The Storm Prediction Center maintains a 5% risk for severe weather (less than a Slight Risk), for the potential of an isolated strong wind gust in any thunderstorm. Bring an umbrella if you’re headed out tonight, especially after the evening commute.

Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy, becoming mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely. Chance of precipitation 70%. Low temperatures in the upper 60’s to lower 70’s. The evening commute should remain dry, but overnight looks wet.

Tuesday: Scattered showers early, becoming partly cloudy with a high in the middle 80’s. West winds around 5 miles per hour. The wet weather early on will give way to rapidly warming conditions. Depending on the amount of sun, some areas could approach 90 degrees.

Summer begins with splendid weather

Astronomical summer officially begins at 1:04am on Friday with the summer solstice, but the weather may more resemble early to mid spring. Lower dew points and temperatures in the upper 70’s to low 80’s will be common throughout the area on Friday, making it the third in a string of several days of pleasant weather expected through the weekend. Afternoon high temperatures and humidity will be on the climb by the end of the weekend, however, with an increased chance of storminess expected by early next week. Enjoy the pleasant air while it sticks around!

Today (Friday): Sunny with highs in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s. South winds from 5 to 10 miles per hour. A bit cooler near the shore.

Tonight: Clear, with lows in the 50’s to lower 60’s. As usual, it will be colder outside of the city. South winds 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Saturday: Sunny with highs in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s. South winds from 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Pleasant weather through the weekend

High pressure, settled in over the Northeast United States, is providing pleasant weather with little clouds and near-average temperatures. Lowered humidity and a lack of rain chances has the weather feeling extra-special, after a week or two of unsettled weather which featured chances of showers and storms each day. Over the next few days, a slow warming trend is expected as a ridge builds into the area aloft. This will bring warmer air into the Northeast US from the west-southwest with time, bringing high temperatures into the 80’s by this weekend.

Early next week, the forecast looks to take a bit of a summery turn with increased heat and humidity as well as chances for organized storms. That’s still fairly far into the forecast, however, so for now try to enjoy the benign and pleasant weather which is in the forecast through this weekend!

Rest of Today (Thursday): Sunny, with highs near 80. South winds around 5 to 10 miles per hour. A gem of a day.

Tonight: Clear and a bit cool, with lows in the upper 50’s to near 60. Cooler inland away from the city. Southwest winds around 10 miles per hour.

Friday: Sunny, with highs near 80. South winds from 5 to 10 miles per hour. Another gem. Summer solstice (official beginning of summer) occurs just after 1am — also the longest day of the year!
